Linux vs Windows

We got a new laptop which is coming with Windows 8 preinstalled (OEM version), and we decided to Format our HDD, and to install Linux on it.

So, is it possible to get the license key of our Windows 8 which was previously installed? How to read Windows 8 (works also for Windows 10) License Key from Linux?

As today all shipped laptops do not have a sticker on the with license key, and we do not want to spend some hundred bucks on a new Windows 8 Operating System.

Yes it is possible to get it even if you have Linux installed, the key is stored in BIOS ACPI-firmware, to get it open your Linux terminal and type following command:

sudo cat /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/MSDM

which will give us following results:

MSDMUSECCSDLH43STARSSS #####-#####-#####-#####-#####johny@johny-kubuntu-noteboo:~$

we replaced our product key with #, from here you can copy down your product key if you’ll need it for a Windows 8 Activation.

Also you can learn How to Fix This copy of Windows is not genuine.

  1. That is AWESOME information! Thanks much, it is very very helpful! However, it can be made a little easier to read the output. Using strings nicely separates it onto its own line.

    sudo strings /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/MSDM
    ~TOSINVTOSINV00
    ACPI
