While we learned to shutdown computers by opening the Start menu and pressing the Shutdown Computer button, Microsoft decided to change this feature, or even make it harder to find in its new versions of Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
To shutdown Windows 8 you should pull out the Charms menu, click the Settings charm and press the Power button then select whether to shutdown or restart.
In Windows 8.1 you can right click on the Start button and select Shut down from it’s menu or from the sign out menu.
Fortunately, there’s a easy way to put the shutdown functions just one click away, in the Start menu as in the old good times.
So here is the easy way to create tiles in the Start menu:
1. Create a Shortcut
Right-click on your desktop, then go to New and select Shortcut, a window should appear, in the Location box, type:
- For Shutdown tile: shutdown /s /t 0
- For Restart tile: shutdown /r /t 0
- For Sleep tile: C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0
- For Logoff tile: C:\Windows\System32\logoff.exe
- For Lock tile in Windows 8: C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation
2. Finish the operation
Click Next to continue, then type a name for the shortcut (shutdown, restart, lock, etc.) then click Finish.
3. Change icon
To change icon of the shortcut, right-click on it > go to Properties > Change Icon > select an icon from the box and click Ok (there’s a Shutdown icon) or you can find some cool icons on the internet and add them here by clicking Browse.
4. Pin to Start menu
Right-click on the shortcut and select Pin to Start, now this shortcut will appear in the Start menu.
