File names from our computer have two parts: the name and the extension. For example: explorer.exe the Microsoft’s browser, “explorer” it’s the name and “.exe” it’s the extension. However your computer seems too smart, and hides extension if he thinks it’s a known one.

Windows 7 / Vista / XP

1Open Folder Options
Windows 7/Vista – Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Folder Options
Windows XP – open My Computer, on the top menu click Tools > Folder Options

2Show/Hide
Click the View tab, then under Advanced settings scroll up till you find Hide extensions for known file types

  • To show extensions Uncheck the box
  • To hide extensions Check the box
Windows 8 / 8.1

Just open a File Explorer (Windows Explorer) and click the View tab. In the right find File name extensions checkbox.

  • To show extensions Check the box
  • To hide extensions Uncheck the box
