unity 8 shell

We have to let you know that Ubuntu will switch to Mir display server with Unity 8 desktop. We hope that Unity 8 will be available already for Ubuntu 15.10 Willy Werewolf. A preview version of Unity 8 is available for users. It has it’s own official PPA and can be installed easy.

Until now Unity 8 desktop preview was available just for developers for testing purposes.  Now it’s public and available for everyone.

Do you wanna give it a try ? Here is how you install it.

Step 1. You will have to add the official Unity 8 PPA writing the following commands in terminal:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:unity8-desktop-session-team/unity8-preview-lxc

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo apt-get install unity8-lxc

Step 2.  Now, to install Unity 8 you will have to run the following commands:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install unity8-lxc

Step 3. Now, you have to set up Unity 8 desktop preview LXC with the following command:

sudo unity8-lxc-setup

It will take some time to set up, be patient because it downloads the ISO and then extracts. Also a slightly modified version of LightDM will be installed. A restart will be required.

Step 4. After restart from the login screen you will have to select Unity 8 desktop environment:

Click the Ubuntu icon near to your login name:

ubuntu login screen

You should see the option to choose Unity 8. Select it:

Select_Unity8

Now you can type your password and login with new Unity 8!
