Finally Apple released iOS 8, a pretty great update with lots of new features that’ll make users happy. It’s available to officially download via iTunes, or directly from your device. The update is available to almost all iPhone and iPad owners – iPhone 5, 5S, 5C, 4S, iPad 2, 3, 4, Air, Mini and iPod touch 5th generation.

To install iOS 8 follow the instructions below:

Note that you need to have the latest iTunes version, and the latest iOS version.

1. Backup
Backup using iCloud – go to Settings, iCloud, Storage and Backup, then tap Back Up Now.
Backup using iTunes – plug in your device, choose it from the menu on iTunes, select Back Up Now, the backup will be saved on your computer’s hard disk.

2. Free space
The new iOS requires a lot of space to download and install, you’ll need between 5-7GB of free space. That’s a lot and you may need to delete apps, videos and photos. If you are in lack of space, start with apps, because they’re the easiest to replace when you reload the on your device.

3. Download and Install
The process is very simple, you can install through iTunes or directly from your device.

Install through device – Go to Settings, General, Software Update.
Install through iTunes – Plug your device into computer, open up iTunes, navigate to the Summary tab for your device and click Update. If everything goes fine the download will start immediately, if you are told that there are no new updates available, try again later.

The download might be quite slow, as Apple’s servers get overburdened. But you can download an unofficial version using the links below.

How to download iOS 8 unofficially

If you don’t want to wait till your device updates from Apple’s server, you can obtain an unofficial copy of iOS 8.

Once the download completes, follow these steps:

1.Extract the downloaded file and make sure you find a file that ends in .ispw
2.Plug in your device, select it in iTunes and go to the Summary tab.
3.Hold down the Shift key (Windows) or the Option key (OS X), click Restore button. Browser the .ispw file you downloaded and wait for the update to finish.

If the upgrade process fails, you may have to enter DFU mode and restore your device from a backup.
