People like to download their favorite YouTube videos and would want to keep a local copy no matter how hard it is. Luckily there are plenty of tools to do this in Ubuntu without any hustle. It makes it easy for you to watch any video you want any time.  See below some simple steps on how to do it.

Many Linux Distros come with Mozilla Firefox browser preinstalled. You can easy install an addon for Mozilla Firefox that will allow you to download YouTube videos.

youtube-dl

youtube-dl is the best and easy way to download videos from YouTube on any Linux It is fast and easy. It makes no mistakes and has quite a wide range of functionalities.

To install youtube-dl, open Terminal and paste the following commands:

sudo curl https://yt-dl.org/downloads/2016.02.22/youtube-dl -o /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl

sudo chmod a+rx /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl

Gmediafinder

Gmediafinder is a software to search stream and / or download files form youtube, dailymotion, vimeo, and others engines without flash.

It support fullscreen mode (double click on the video or f key/esc), visualisations and use the gstreamer engine to play sounds and videos.

For youtube you can select you prefered resolution and it give priority to webm(vorbis/vp8) and mp4 format for video seeking! (and lower cpu usage than flv…).

Use the following commands in Terminal to install Gmediafinder:

sudo add-app-repository ppa:s-lagui/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install gmediafiner

Movegrab

Movgrab is a command line tool for downloading video clips from websites such as YouTube, Daily Motion, Break.com, Vimeo, Blip.tv, Liveleak and others.

Movgrab features:

  • proxy support
  • write the download to std-out so you can easily play the video in an external application
  • lets you pick the preferred video/audio formats for sites that offer more than one
  • generic downloader which means Movgrab might be able to download videos from other websites not listed as supported
  • can resume downloads (use “-r” – only works when writing a single file)
  • fork into background (use “-b” flag)
  • written in straight C so it has no dependencies
