Some users got the following problem while emptying trash in Ubuntu 14.04. When clicking right click on the trash icon and chose Empty Trash. Just after clicking you can see the progress bar but it’s not moving and you get the file manager frozen.

You can kill the process with terminal, but when checking the trash it appears to be still full. Also restarting the computer and/or repeating attempts to empty the trash will not work.

Checking the internet and forums I did not find who or what causes this issue but there is a way to solve this issue if you are facing it when trying to delete the trash via GUI in Ubuntu 14.XX.

Type following in your terminal:

sudo rm -rf ~/.local/share/Trash/*

Take care because this command will delete everything from your trash folder and you won’t be able to recover any file.
