Setup and Configuration Guide for Yoast SEO
Before starting with Yoast SEO plugin, you will have to make sure to remove any existing SEO plugins like All In One SEO, Old All In One SEO, Headspace 2 or any other.
Now you can start to download and install Yoast SEO plugin. Note that you can export settings from other old SEO plugins and import them in Yoast SEO plugin.
Then when you will click on SEO from you WordPress Dashboard you will go to Yoast SEO General settings page.
You can go to the next tab: Company Info, where you can add your website name, choose if website is owned by a company or person and you can also add a logo.
Note: Every time you make some changes, do not forget to click Save Changes.
Next you will go to Webmaster Tools tab. Webmaster tools tab is very important, through it you will connect your website with Google Webmaster tools, Alexa, other webmaster tools. This will increase your website SEO and rating, and will make it more easy discoverable for search engines.
To get started, just register to Google Webmaster tools for example, then add your website and you can verify it just from clicking the link from the Yoast SEO plugin.
Titles & Metas
This is also on the most important parts that you have to configure. The things you will have to configure are the following:
In Post Types tab:
From Posts, Pages, Media and other things if you have for example MailPoet page you will have to set the Title template just like this: %%title%%
This is an important SEO things, as we want the search engines to see only the Title of the article, we do not want the brand of your blog to be repeated next to each article title. See the screenshot:
In Taxonomies tab:
In taxonomies tab you will have to use noindex, follow tags everywhere. Same thing, it will not allow search engines to index pages and consider them duplicated.
In Other tab:
This is very useful for search engines, as it will not allow the search engines to count same post twice and to consider them as duplicate content, read more here about Duplicate content. So add:
Noindex subpages of archives
Then add noodp and noydir, basically this will not allow search engines to write description from DMOZ or Yahoo Directory, but from your website only.
noodp meta robots tag sitewide
noydir meta robots tag sitewide
With social section you can easy connect your website to your social networks, this is also an important thing for SEO, so if you have a Facebook, Google Plus or Twitter page for your website link them with Yoast SEO plugin.
XML Sitemap file, is a file which has all links to your website. The only thing you have to do is to enable Ping Yahoo, Ping Google, which will allow Yahoo and Google easier and faster to index your website links. Also you will have to Exclude Media and Tags. See the screenshot:
Index Sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools
This is a very important step, your sitemaps will not be indexed automatically, you have to index them manually. You have to do some easy steps:
So go to Google Webmaster Tools page, and then to your website property if you added it.
Then you will have to go to Crawl -> Sitemaps and click Add/Test Sitemap. You can first test the link to your sitemap before adding it.
When it is done your sitemap will appear under the Sitemaps (All content types) at the bottom of the page.
This is one of the best free SEO plugin for WordPress along with All In One SEO Pack plugin. If you want to have a good SEO and your website to be easy visible for search engines, I highly recommend you to make this changes in your Yoast SEO plugin. Remember that an incorrect configuration may bring negative SEO effects to your Blog.
